I know it sounds weird, but you have to keep an open and imaginative mind. There will be times where I won’t feel like going to the gym to keep my body fit, so I have come up with a way to keep me motivated to go to the gym beyond the great classes and the multitude of exercise machines.
Here is how I have transformed my gym day to a spa day:
This may be a strectch (no pun intended) for some, but if you really think about it and have a great imagination you just may see it my way. Massage is the manipulation of muscles in a very soothing and or invgorating way. What better way to get a massage, than to practice yoga. The stretches, maneuvers, and poses you do with your body can be very beneficial to the body. There are poses that literally allows your body to massage your internal organs (cat pose, spinal twist, and downward facing dog), muscles to massage other muscles (cow face pose and triangle pose), and put your mind and body in a state of relaxation to a point where you are able to fall asleep (corpse pose).
Muscle manipulation, soothing stretches, relaxation, and sleep? That sounds like a massage therapy session if I ever heard one!
Steam Facial and Hair Treatment
After that great massage, a facial may be next on your list. This is where the steam room comes in. After working out, head to the locker room, get changed out of those clothes, and don one of those beautiful white towels or two and head over to the steam room. For an added bonus, slap a little hair conditioner on your hair for a two for one steam treatment.
I don’t know about your gym, but the one I go to has a eucalyptus steam room! What! Yes, the wonderful smell of eucalyptus! There are so many benefits to eucalyptus- it treats congestion, sinus headaches, stress, bronchitis, …the list goes on and on.
So how can steam benefit your face (and exposed skin on your body)? Utilizing steam for the face and body can be effective in removing acne and acne scars. Steam opens up the pores and increases sweating. The sweat cleanses the pores of excess oil, grime and dirt and also has a antibacterial effect (due to the salt produced), reducing bacteria levels in the skin and giving a thorough, yet gentle cleansing. Steam also stimulates blood circulation to the skin resulting in a greater supply of oxygen and nutrients while moistening and softening the skin.
As far as using the steam room for your hair, there are many excellent benefits! The steam helps intensify the moisture levels of the hair by opening the hair’s cuticle to allow the conditioner to penetrate deeper. Frequent steam treatments will enhance the condition of hair, locking in moisture and reducing breakage. Steaming the hair while deep conditioning infuses as much moisture to your hair as your hair will allow. Afterwards, the hair becomes shinier and softer and less prone to frizzing up in humidity. And if your hair is naturally curly like mine, that is a god send!
So let’s recap, after one day in the gym your muscles have been rejuvenated, you are super relaxed, your skin is glowing and refreshed, your hair is soft and silky, and oh yeah… you had a great work out!
